What is Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari About?

The world is filled with spirits that often cross into the human world. To survive, the spirits must gain a tangible form which also results in them having different personalities and natures. The spirits that fuse into objects to gain their form are called tsukumogami and can be anywhere from gentle and friendly to violent and hostile. The Saenome clan is entrusted with sending malevolent spirits back to their world and preventing harm from befalling the people and their lives.

One of the members of the Saenome Clan is young Kunato Hyouma who somehow does not see himself aligned with the ways of the clan. He holds a grudge against the tsukumogami for taking something dear away from him. Kunato’s grandfather believes that his anger and resentment towards the tsukumogami will lead to greater catastrophes that will endanger everyone.

He sends Kunato to the house of Nagatsuki Botan, a woman who stays with the tsukumogami as family. Kunato is put to work on his rage toward the tsukumogami and overcomes his own feelings to maintain the peace that his clan is trying to preserve.
