Shenmue Anime is confirmed for a Summer 2022 release! New York’s Comic-Con has chipped in some interesting announcements for lovers of games and anime alike. The popular video game franchise will be receiving an anime adaptation that will debut next year!
Shenmue was first released in 1999 and was published by Sega. Yu Suzuki created and directed the games that follow a brawler-style roleplaying game format. Shenmue is also well-known because of its reputation as the most expensive game developed in its time.
The anime series, however, is a pleasant surprise. The anime has already been added to My Anime List. The project has only been announced but safe to say, it has been in the works for a while and here’s all that we know about the upcoming Shenmue the Animation!

Shenmue Anime Release Date
Crunchyroll and Adult Swim are set to co-produce this upcoming release similar to Fena: Pirate Princess that released as Summer 2021/Fall 2021 release and Blade Runner Black Lotus, which is slated for a November 2021 release. The New York Comin Con revealed the first look for the anime that is now also available on the Official Website of Shenmue the Animation.
The production details in terms of plot lines are still blurry. The last game to release in the franchise for Shenmue 3, has a very niche following in specific regions of the world. As much as the series is popular within these specific pockets, it is fair to say that this isn’t a franchise as explosive as Shin Megami Tensei.
The Shenmue anime has confirmed a run of 13 episodes that puts forth a little more promise of continuing the Shenmue franchise storyline instead of waiting for the release of Shenmue 4. The anime has confirmed a Summer 2022 release but is yet to narrow down on a more specific date. The key visual for anime has been revealed!
Will there be Shenmue Anime Dub?
Crunchyroll will stream the anime outside Japan and mainland China while The United States will have Adult Swim host all 13 episodes on its Toonami block. English Subs are rather confirmed for the release but any possibilities of Shenmue Anime English Dub are still a doubt.
Shenmue Anime Cast
Chikara Sakurai of One Punch Man Season 2 fame will be directing Shenmue the Animation and Sola Entertainment will handle production management. Yu Suzuki, the creator of the video game franchise is an executive producer for the show. The production is a joint venture of Crunchyroll / Adult Swim. It is rather common for creatives of the original media to produce, adaptations, like Eiichiro Oda for the One Piece live-action.
The voice cast of the show is yet to be revealed. It would also be a plus to retain the original music of the game as Yoko Kanno returned for the Cowboy Bebop live-action.
